Bangladesh, standing on the verge of industrial expansion, is thriving to take necessary and advanced steps to reorganize the energy sector of the country. New and innovative sources and ways of power generation, privatized power plant and large-scale government projects and initiatives have already boosted the sector and is still emerging with great potentials. A new dimension in the energy, as well as power sector is the very recent leap, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. “I believe it fulfils the nation’s dream,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this after laying the foundation stone of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant in Rooppur, Pabna. “After decades of speculation, plans and programmers, commissioning of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is going to be a reality heralding a new era for Bangladesh,” the prime minister said this while inaugurating the project. A total of 262 acres of land have been acquired to set up the plant. Bangladesh plans to produce 2400MW of electricity step by step from the Rooppur plant. The plant’s tenure is 60 years with the option to extend it by another 20 years.
